PHOBIAS

COMMUNICATION DESIGN STUDY

The purpose of this project was to choose three phobias and communicate their meanings using graphic details. Though SolidWorks is my software of choice for engineering endeavors, this project helped to familiarize myself with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign for drawing and graphical layout.

CONCEPT

I liked the idea of illustrating obscure and ridiculous phobias, hence the choice to go with pogonophobia, globophobia, and anthophobia, which are the fear of beards, balloons, and flowers, respectively.

My first approach at sketching integrated elements of common, less obscure fears. I thought that by integrating barbed wire into harmless flowers, the poster would show the merit in these seemingly ridiculous phobias.

COLOR, HIERARCHY, ETC.

After initial sketches, I chose to pursue a more comical tone instead of the classically scary tone of the sketching. The next step was to draw vector objects using the spline tool in Adobe Illustrator to create unique, original forms that use a more minimal color scheme.

I created several different drafts using different layouts, wordings, and colors before choosing the final poster that used a dictionary style definition alongside a more streamlined black background.
